“Genta”, the Malay word for a bell, connotes the ‘clarion call’ of an urgent message to be communicated to the public at large. Moving from primitive communication methods to today’s sophisticated communication technology, the guiding principles of public interest remain at the heart of the message in every form. Since it’s establishment in 2010, Genta Media aims to be a public interest publisher in Malaysia’s intellectual heartland. We believe that knowledge is not a privilege reserved for a selected few, and that every citizen holds the rights to freedom of information, because only informed people make enlightened citizens. Civil society is built on the backs of brave ordinary Joes who understand their rights and care enough to exercise them. We aim to inform and educate the public towards self-empowerment and self-awareness. Therefore, we publish books on a wide range of socio-economic, political issues and important ideas that affect our daily lives. We also show ourselves in book fairs, invite scholars and activists to share their views and thoughts in Genta talks, and publish Street Voice, a monthly pullout that mainly focuses on social and cultural criticism. With these attempts we hope to reach our readers more directly, and to create dialogues with them by offering different approaches to view the way society works.
